ISSUE 8 | HOW TO BE HAPPY
Welcome to our newest innovation!
Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.
Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.
~ Groucho Marx
THINK
Happiness is a choice.
You don’t have to pursue it. You don’t have to search for it. You don’t have to earn it.
Just choose it.
Then choose it again.
How do you do that? By transforming it into a daily practice.
Here’s a few tips to help you:
1: Focus on what you are grateful for. Gratitude is a powerful positive force - researchers have found that people who regularly use gratitude journals are much happier.
2: Smile. Studies have shown that smiling works like a continual feedback loop, reinforcing emotions and even lowering heart rates.
3: Nurture your relationships. It’s been scientifically proven that deep, rewarding relationships are one of the keys to long term happiness. Spend some time with your spouse, catch up with a friend, ring your mum.
4: Meditate. Meditation is one of the strongest methods for reducing stress hormones and literally rewiring the brain. Find a version you like and get it into your diary on a daily basis - even 10-15 minutes will have an enormous positive impact.
5: Exercise. Endorphins created during physical exercise have a whole host of wonderful benefits, including lowering stress and boosting mood.
6: Accept that you won’t always feel happy. Experiencing the full range of your emotions is a big part of being human - emotions help you evaluate your experiences, deepen your understanding of yourself and fuel your growth. Acknowledge and accept all of your emotions - they are crucial to your wellbeing.
FEEL
This is a big question, the answer to which will have far reaching impact on your life, so spend some time sitting with it…
What makes you happy?
You could live anywhere, learn any skill, travel all over the world, work in any industry - you can design your life the way you like it. You have incredible freedom to choose, so you need to know:
- Which choices feed your soul?
- When have you been happiest?
- What fills you with light and laughter?
DO
Keep your mind in the present moment - you’ll be much happier there.
Very few people are practiced at keeping themselves in the moment, but doing so is an excellent tool for staying happy.
Add at least four mindfulness exercises into your diary this week.

LISTEN
The way we respond to the circumstances in our lives and what creates happiness, or the lack of it.
Harvard psychologist Dan Gilbert, author of ‘Stumbling On Happiness’, challenges the idea that we’ll be miserable if we don’t get what we want. He says our beliefs about what will make us happy are often wrong, and that our ‘psychological immune system’ actually lets us feel truly happy even when things don’t go as planned.
