THINK
In this newsletter we’re talking about stepping away from getting things done to review and reflect, so you can get get things done better.
We’re now halfway through the year, so this is a good time to discuss the mid-year review - a practice like any other reflection activity, where we take the time to look over our progress, reevaluate our goals and recalibrate our personal productivity systems. It’s a moment to pause, step back, and gain clarity on where we stand in relation to our aspirations, allowing us to make the most of the second half of the year.
By taking the time and space to reflect you’ll be able to assess if your decisions and actions in the first six months of the year have moved you in the right direction. First, identify a quiet time and place you can use to reflect. Take your goal book, some paper and a pen.
Look over the goals you have set for yourself.
- Are they still relevant for you?
- Is there a slight alternative you are now working towards?
- Do you think your goals are still closely linked to the things you are passionate about?
- Are you still clear on WHY you are working towards these goals?
- How do you think you are tracking towards these goals?
- What do you think you have achieved?
Asking yourself these questions highlights the behaviours and actions that have worked so far. This is really important to being able to progress further in the second half of the year.
As John C. Maxwell says, “Reflective thinking turns experience into insight.”
FEEL
When you’re looking back over your progress for the year, it’s important that you also look at the challenges you have faced and how you felt when they showed up.
Reflect on the challenges that have come up in so far in 2024.
- How did you feel when they presented?
- Why did these obstacles or challenges occur?
- What did you do to overcome them?
- Do you feel like you were able to build some resilience?
- Do you feel like you kept moving towards your goal?
- Now, when you first wake up how do you feel?
When life gets hard, it’s easy to become discouraged or feel as if things are out of control. But you can always control how you feel.
Strive to feel at peace with yourself and others. Focus on feeling grateful, encouraged, and optimistic, no matter what is going on right now.
Choose a word that you want to define how you feel in 2024. What can you do to embody this feeling for the rest of the year?
DO
"It is great to be introspective; self-analysis can be useful, but only if it results in action." Joe Sacco
Now is the time to consider the actions you’ll put into place as a result of the insights you have gained from your review so far.
If you’re going to be more effective in the second half of the year…
- What habits do you need to change?
- What extra support do you need?
- What processes do you need to put in place to be more effective?
- How will you address your next challenge?
This is a perfect opportunity for refining your goals and working on a specific strategy for the next six months - exactly what will you do to get where you want to go?
Next steps:
1: Set a date for your next personal review.
2: Identify three things you can do today to start building momentum - and go do them!
