ISSUE 70 | EMBRACING POSITIVE EMOTIONS

Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.

The first core truth about positive emotions is that they open our hearts and our minds, making us more receptive and more creative.
~ Barbara Fredrickson

THINK

Positive emotions are a huge part of our emotional range. Though they’re usually pleasurable to experience, they’re far more than just ‘happy feelings’, and they come and go just like the negative emotions do.

Some of the most common positive emotions are joy, gratitude, peace, hope, inspiration, relief, satisfaction, cheerfulness, enthusiasm, optimism, happiness and love.

Often, we think negatively as our ‘go-to’ response when things don’t seem to be going our way, but we can learn to focus our energy more positively. Doing so has an enormous impact in this area (how we respond circumstances) and we can use it to make a significant difference in our lives.

Use the following questions as prompts to build a memory of positivity you can use as a resource when you need it:

  • When have you felt full of optimism and hope?
  • When have you feared the worst but still believed something good would happen?
  • When have you found an inventive way to try and create a better future?
  • Has a deliberate focus on the positive ever lifted you up or shifted an outcome for you?
  • What brings you joy? Peace? Love?

Positive emotions have considerable impact on the brain - they increase performance, lift our spirits, broaden our horizons and can even trigger the reward centres in the brain, reducing stress hormones. When we experience positive emotions, that also signals the brain we are engaged in activities that align with our values and meet our needs, which trickles down to create even more positive impact.

FEEL

Positive emotions like joy, hope and gratitude don’t just make us feel good now - they also have a positive impact on us in the future.

Unfortunately, many people view the pursuit of future positive emotions as mutually exclusive from enjoying the present …

How often have you heard yourself (or someone you love) say, “I’ll be happy when…”?

Begin building your positivity resources by reflecting on the following questions:

  • When have you felt utter joy?
  • When have you felt that warm glow of complete happiness?
  • Is the source of those positive emotions something that is still available to you? If so, how often do you seek it out?
  • When have you felt most grateful for someone or something?
  • What do you treasure most in life?
  • When do you feel most like giving back?

DO

Research has shown that people who are consistently mindful of joy - on a day-to-day basis - feel more positively than those who only hold a general expectation of happiness at some point in the future. This means it is crucial we embrace activities the generate positive emotions for us, joy in particular.

Try:

  • Deliberately making time for doing something that puts a smile on your face.
  • Being mindful of the emotional implications of decisions you make - if a decision is going to limit your ability to experience daily positive emotions then it may not be the right one.
  • Celebrate the little things often.
  • Train your brain to focus on what you have already achieved, rather than focusing on how far you have to go to reach your next goal.
  • Each night, bring to mind three things you are proud of, grateful for, or that brought you joy, before you go to sleep.
