ISSUE 6 | GETTING INTO FLOW
Welcome to our newest innovation!
Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.
The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.
~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
THINK
Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, world leading researcher in positive psychology, was the first to study, record and subsequently name flow. He describes flow as, “Being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you're using your skills to the utmost.”
It’s an incredibly rewarding experience - in fact, a flow state is one of the most happy and productive states human beings can be in. But getting there can be tricky - like all great things it will require practise.
One of the best ways you can help yourself get into flow is by establishing a mental trigger. That is, each time you sit down to attempt to go into a flow state, do something simple you can repeat. It could be repeating a mantra, taking three deep breaths, even tapping your knee twice - whatever it is, do the exact same thing each time you begin getting into a flow state.
Do this for long enough and you’ll create a cue for your brain. Once the trigger is established, your brain will quickly act accordingly (by getting into flow) the moment you enact the cue.
Mary & I have been doing this with our meditation practise for years, and can now trigger a deep state of relaxation and inner peace in less than a minute by using our triggers. It takes a little time to bed into your subconscious, but believe me when I tell you it works brilliantly!
FEEL
At TED 2019, researchers had attendees choose words that described their experience of feeling in flow. From thousands of responses, the top three answers were: ‘creator’, ‘superhero’ and ‘warrior’.
Reaching a flow state often boosts confidence, improves mood and helps us navigate the world with less self-consciousness.
Flow creates a vivid reminder of how fantastic life can be - a sense of being master of your own destiny.
When you do something you deeply enjoy, reaching a flow state is almost effortless.
What do you enjoy doing that can sometimes be challenging? Write a list of activities you can use to practise getting into a flow state. Describe your experience of feeling in flow.
DO
1: Stay hydrated!
About 75% of your brain is water, so one of the simplest ways you can improve the performance of your brain (and therefore boost the concentration and focus needed for flow) is to make sure you stay hydrated! Drinking enough water ensures the brain functions well and prevents you from feeling foggy and fatigued.
2: Try Tai Chi or Qigong
These two activities are known to enhance overall well being and encourage a relaxed state - they’re very much like meditation in motion. Done well, both will ground you in the moment and bring clarity and focus. They’re low impact, high reward - so give one a try!
