ISSUE 46 | REVIEWING YOUR YEAR (PART 2)

Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.

The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.
~ Barack Obama

THINK

Once you’ve completed the reflection outlined in last week’s edition, it’s time to start thinking about, and feeling, your aspirations for next year and putting in the plans and processes to bring them into reality.

Grab your notes and get ready to plan and implement!

  • What would a dream year look like for you in 2024?
  • What does success mean for you in 2024?
  • What three big goals will you accomplish next year?
  • What three skills will you acquire?

Imagine we are now in December 2024. You’ve integrated your experience and learning from 2023 and 2024 was the most incredible year of your life - surpassing even your wildest expectations. With all of your energy, write about your year . What happened and how did you feel?

Let’s look even deeper and examine what is driving you. Ask yourself:

  • Why do you want to achieve these goals?
  • Do you want to receive external praise?
  • Do you want to make your parents proud?
  • Do you want to leave the world better than you found it
  • Knowing your ‘why’ will help you move faster towards your dreams.

FEEL

To connect with feeling excited about the prospect of experiencing your dream 2024, you need to have clarity about where you want to head. Take a moment to check back in on your values, your beliefs and any underlying fears about moving forward.

  • How are you feeling right now?
  • How do you feel about 2024?
  • What is the background emotion you would like to feel in 2024?
  • Which people in your life do you feel most grateful for?
  • Which person in your life do you feel has inspired you the most? How?
  • How do you feel about your relationship with yourself moving into 2024?
  • What do you feel is most important to you?

DO

You won’t be surprised that the way to fill yourself with vision is to develop a plan for the upcoming year. However, you may be surprised to learn that the best way to plan for next year does not include setting goals and then describing in detail everything you’ll need to do in order to achieve those goals.

To create your plan for the 2024, create goals in these four areas:

Doing Goals: goals are about completing some action or a series of actions.

Becoming Goals: goals are about changing who you are - do you want to become more patient, more grateful, more focused, more healthy?

Outcome Goals: These goals are about achieving a result that is not fully under your control.

Learning Goals: These goals are about building expertise, maintaining expertise, or exposing yourself to a field of information that is new to you.

Instead of obsessing over the outcome, think about the processes and systems required to get to your goal. As James Clear says, “Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress.”

Here are some questions that will help:

  • How do your goals for 2024 translate into actionable habits and processes?
  • What habits, behaviours, or attitudes will you need to develop or adopt next year?
  • What things or habits do you need to stop doing?

Once you’ve broken down your dreams into actionable processes, summarise your reflection on one clean sheet. This summary will be your anchor for 2024 - place it somewhere clearly visible, like next to your mirror or on the wall behind your desk.
