ISSUE 35 | MOTIVATION
Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.
THINK
Staying motivated is no easy task - but it is the key to successfully accomplishing one goal after another.
Motivation comes and goes, but rest assured it doesn’t go for good. It will come back. Helping it return requires working out in advance what you will do when you lose motivation.
When you loose motivation, or get stuck doing things you don't like, find yourself good reasons to finish. They may not be obvious at first, but if you dig deep and find some your motivation will come back.
Consider:
- Will completing this task give me a material reward?
- How will I gain personally by completing the task?
- How will I feel when I complete the task?
- Will completing this task take me closer to my big goals?
Keep your awareness on your thoughts - challenge any negative ones and replace them with a corresponding positive thought. Purposefully instilling a positive outlook will keep you motivated and create more positive results in your life.
FEEL
When it comes to motivation, attitude is everything, so how you feel about doing a task is an important part of staying motivated.
Before you start working on any task, look for ways to have fun doing it.
Ask yourself:
- How can I enjoy this task?
- What can I do to make this fun for myself?
- How can I make this work the best part of my day?
You can find enjoyment in just about anything if you make a habit of looking for it.
Connecting with your big picture by visualising your performance ahead of time helps too - ‘see’ and ‘feel’ it and you will stay motivated.
DO
One of the ways of keeping professional athletes motivated is to change training regimes so that they stay challenged. It’s very hard to stay motivated when everything stays the same.
How can you challenge yourself?
Do you need a break so you can recharge?
What change can you make to your daily routine?
When something doesn’t feel right, take time out and look for a different approach to the task. What will keep you motivated and get the job done?
It’s also important to remember that action is what will produce motivation. It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true. Most people wait for motivation to strike before they take action… when in fact all you need to do to get motivated… is take ACTION!
Don’t wait for inspiration to strike - change the routine, take action and motivation will follow.
