ISSUE 114 | THE POWER OF AFFIRMATIONS

Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.

Every thought we think is creating our future.
~ Louise Hay

THINK

Affirmations are short, powerful statements that help rewire how you think, act, and feel. Though they’re often dismissed as ‘positive thinking fluff’, the science tells a different story. Affirmations, when used correctly, activate your brain’s neuroplasticity - that is, its ability to rewire itself through repetition and emotion.

The subconscious mind doesn’t distinguish between reality and imagination. It simply responds to repeated messaging. This means that if you’ve been telling yourself, “I’ll never be confident” or “I’m always messing it up,” your brain is faithfully building a life that matches those instructions.

The good news? You can rewrite the script.

The following self-reflection questions will help:

  • What do I say to myself daily - without even realising it?
  • Do I think those messages are helpful or are they causing harm?
  • What belief would I like to hold instead?

Affirmations work best when they feel personal, empowering, and true enough to believe in - just enough to stretch, not ‘break’, your reality.

FEEL

The emotions attached to affirmations really matter.

Affirmations are not magic words. They're most effective when they’re emotionally charged - spoken with belief, backed by breath, and felt in the body. Use affirmations that way and your subconscious will perk up and pay attention.

It’s also worth noting it is common to feel resistance. Saying “I am worthy” might trigger an internal eye-roll or a flood of doubt. That’s not failure - it’s feedback.

Ask yourself:

  • What emotion surfaces when I affirm something positive about myself?
  • Do I allow myself to believe I can grow?
  • What part of me resists - and what do I feel that part needs?

Even if you don’t fully believe the affirmation yet, begin anyway. Your belief will catch up to your repetition, especially if you can connect it with emotion and intention.

DO

Here's how to get started with affirmations that actually work:

1. Craft Your Own
Make them specific, believable, and present-tense. Avoid “I will…” and aim for “I am…” or “I choose…”

Examples:

  • I am learning to trust myself.
  • I choose to show up with calmness and clarity.
  • Each day, I grow stronger and more grounded.

2. Say Them Daily
Speak them aloud with feeling - ideally in front of a mirror. Bonus: say them while moving (walking, stretching) to engage the body.

3. Write & Display
Put your affirmations on your mirror, desk, or phone lock screen. Repetition creates results.

4. Add Emotion
Visualise what it feels like to embody the affirmation. Imagine the moment you believe it fully. Let that emotional charge power the words.

5. Track The Shift
Stick with one affirmation for 7 days. Then reflect:

  • Has anything changed in my thinking?
  • How do I feel when I say it now versus day one?

Challenge:

Choose one affirmation and repeat it for seven days. Feel it - engage with it fully.

The words you speak to yourself become the world you walk in.

You don’t need to believe it fully yet - just begin.
