ISSUE 103 | PERCEPTION SHAPES OUR EXPERIENCE

Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.
~ Maya Angelou

THINK

Thinking and feeling have long been considered conflicting approaches, but recent research has revealed that they’re actually tightly linked. Cognitive processing is needed to bring out emotional responses, and emotional cues guide our thinking so we can adapt our responses to our world.

Perception, by definition, is our ability to see, hear or become aware of something through the senses. It involved recognising what our senses are telling us and giving meaning to the messages they send.

Our perceptions can either help or hinder us. If we’re emotional and self-centred, we’ll always have problems that seem overwhelming. But we can all control our attitude, emotions, judgements and responses. We control how we view and respond to obstacles.

As Ryan Haliday says, if we can “view things dispassionately and curiously, we get an edge over obstacles and a chance to turn them to our advantage.”

The first step in changing your perception is improving your self-awareness. Think about the thoughts and assumptions that occur automatically and drive your perceptions:

  • When do you tend to notice things in a fixed or negative way?
  • Do you have a pattern of thinking this way?
  • How do you react to these thoughts?

Pay attention to the patterns that arise so you can get some distance and choose a different viewpoint instead of simply reacting. Research shows that simply labelling thoughts as ‘just a thought’ can help create this distance.

Imagine how you would like your life to be and remember you’re never powerless. Whatever the situation, you control how you perceive it and respond. You have the power to transform not only yourself but every experience and obstacle you face.

FEEL

Emotions affect what we perceive and help our brain determine what’s most useful to pay attention to. They draw our attention to certain things and away from others, keeping our attention focused or distracting us from information that’s available to us. Emotions also affect how we interpret what we perceive and how confident we are about what we notice.

Your emotions vary from moment to moment and your perception can be changed along with them. What you see is often distorted by the emotions that are up in the moment. For example, a burst of negative emotional energy such as frustration or anger can change your reality in an instant.

Bring to mind a conflict you have had with someone and ask yourself the following reflective questions:

  • Did you find it hard to shift your attention from a strong emotion and move onto something different?
  • Did you feel so certain about all the things you felt strongly about that you became reluctant to change your perception, confident that you were ‘right’?
  • Did you interpret anything this person said or did as negative, done with negative intention or with a hidden negative agenda?
  • Did you ignore positive things about them and their behaviour?

DO

Bring to mind a situation that you know you need to change your perception about. Take a step back and work through the following exercise to shift your thinking so you can handle the situation in a way that looks after you.

  • What is the most appropriate thinking?
  • How can I turn this situation upside down?
  • Is there a hidden opportunity here?
  • Where do I have the power?
  • What is outside my control?
  • What response will I choose?
  • What should I reframe?
  • How will I reframe it??
  • How do I feel after completing this exercise?

There’s no question that your perception is your reality. Everyone has ups and downs, but if you’re stuck in a cycle of negative thinking, it’s vital you do everything you can to lift yourself out. Appreciating the good things in your life will make you feel more positively, which in turn opens your eyes to more good things.

Changing your thinking costs you nothing - but it dramatically alters your experience.
