ISSUE 139 | GOING WITHIN

Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.

Who looks outside dreams; who looks inside awakes.

THINK

Feeling connected with your innermost self is a wonderful thing. In personal growth, we talk plenty about ‘going within’.

But how do you actually do that?

Going within is a very personal practice and can feel awkward at first, particularly if you’ve spent years looking to others for answers.

In practical terms, connection means where we are placing our mind - what we are connecting our thoughts to and where we direct our attention. Establishing the new neural pathways takes continuous practise, but if you keep it up, you will reach a point where those pathways are cemented and going within takes very little effort at all.

Though it can feel clunky at first when we’re out of practise, the truth is we all know how to go inside ourselves. If someone asked you if you remembered to turn off the oven, or lock the door as you left the house, you automatically go within to find the answer. Your attention is no longer on the person asking from the outside world, it has shifted inside yourself as you connect with your memory.

Introspection is an incredibly valuable soft skill. And like all skills, it’s something you can hone and improve.

Set aside five minutes each day to practise. Sit quietly with yourself - no agenda, no goals, just drop inside and experience the connection with yourself without getting lost in your thoughts. All you need to do is be still, stay quiet and listen, even if in the beginning all you are listening to is your own resistance.

FEEL

As you practise going within, you may notice feelings coming and going. This is perfectly normal and you don’t need to do anything other than observe.

Mindfulness techniques can be very helpful in this area - they’ll help you listen, understand and then release your feelings.

We often hide messy emotions from others, but it is imperative we are not hiding from ourselves. When you find yourself getting swept up by an emotion, or upset with yourself, turn inward with curiosity and see what you can uncover.

Is there a deeper fear driving this feeling?
What belief might have created this feeling?

Emotions are a great starting point for reprogramming the subconscious mind with loving, compassionate beliefs.

As you practise be still and breathe deeply. Simply notice the feelings as they come and go. Here’s what that might look like:

Name the feeling - are you sad, happy, confused, ashamed?

Be open to feeling sensations - give your body permission to do what it wants to in the moment.

Look deeper - focus on what is driving the emotion. Did something trigger this feeling?

Above all, remember to be gentle and kind to yourself.

DO

To hone your ‘going within’ skill, begin each day by spending a few moments bringing your awareness to yourself.

What is your body feeling?
What emotions are present?
What state of mind are you in?
What is your mood like?
How rested do you feel?

Centre yourself by taking a few long, slow, deep breaths.

Design yourself a personal check in system, for example:

In my body I notice…… (mentally scan head to toe)
Emotionally, I am feeling….
My mind is…..
I would describe my mood as….
Today, my energy levels are….

After you complete this self check in, spend 10-30 minutes in either silent or guided meditation.
