Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.

You become what you give your attention to.

THINK

We live in an era of relentless distraction. Notifications ping, emails pile up, headlines flash, and our devices keep us in a constant state of partial attention.

While technology has connected us in remarkable ways, it’s also trained our brains to crave novelty over depth - eroding our ability to focus, problem-solve, and think creatively.

Mental fitness is your ability to direct your attention where you choose, recover quickly from setbacks, and maintain clarity under pressure. Just as physical fitness is built through consistent training, mental fitness grows when you intentionally strengthen your 'focus muscles’ and emotional regulation skills.

Dr Cal Newport, professor at Georgetown University, introduces the idea of deep work like this:

“Imagine professional activities performed in a state of pure, distraction-free concentration - like a zen master, but with a laptop. This kind of work pushes your brain to its limits and creates massive value. On the flip side, we have shallow work, which is all the busy work that keeps us feeling productive but doesn’t actually get us anywhere.”

In today’s environment, protecting your attention is a vital survival skill necessary for your goals, relationships, and well-being.

Reflection questions:

  • How easily am I distracted in the middle of important work or conversations?
  • Do I control my technology, or does it control me?
  • What drains my focus most - external interruptions or my own wandering mind?
  • How much of my stress comes from mental overload versus actual workload?

FEEL

When your attention is fractured, you may feel: overwhelmed, like you’re always behind, restless and impatient, frustrated at yourself for not finishing things, and drained even after a day of small, easy tasks.

When you build mental fitness, you may notice: a calm sense of control in your day, greater confidence in your ability to handle challenges, more creativity and better problem-solving, less stress from information overload, and lastly shifting from distracted to focused you realise how much tension you’ve been carrying.

Ask yourself:

  • What would it feel like to truly own my attention again?
  • How might my mood, productivity, and relationships improve if I strengthened my mental focus?
  • What small, daily wins could I give myself to prove I can?

DO

Today is an ideal time to put a mental fitness training plan into action. The following strategies will help:

Start with a Focus Sprint

Choose one task. Set a timer for 25 minutes. Work on nothing else. Take a 5-minute break. Repeat once. This builds focus stamina in short bursts.

Turn Off “Micro-Distractions”

During focus time, silence notifications, close unused tabs, and keep your phone out of arm’s reach.

Feed Your Brain Well

Stay hydrated, eat balanced meals, and prioritise quality sleep - focus is a biological function, not just a mindset.

Practice Mindfulness Daily

Even three minutes of breath awareness can train your brain to notice when it’s drifting and bring it back without judgment.

Build Recovery Breaks Into Your Routine

Mental fitness grows not just through effort, but recovery. Take short walks, stretch, or stare out the window - no screens.

Protect Your Prime Hours

Identify your peak mental energy time and schedule your hardest work then.

This week, choose one daily mental fitness habit - a 25-minute focus sprint, a morning mindfulness practice, or a no-notification hour - and track your progress for seven days. Notice how your focus, stress levels, and sense of accomplishment shift.
