ISSUE 136 | IDENTITY

Each week The (Quantum) Leap summarises a key aspect of success into what you need to Think, Feel and Do to create a personal shift.

You can’t outperform your self-image. Change the story you tell yourself, and you change everything.
~ Paul Blackburn

THINK

Your identity is the story you tell yourself about who you are - your beliefs, habits, values, and expectations, all rolled into one.

If you believe you’re shy, a procrastinator, or someone who just can’t lose weight, you’ll subconsciously make decisions that keep you aligned with that story.

Why? Because your brain loves consistency.

Your subconscious works to ensure your actions match the identity you hold, even if that identity no longer serves you. Changing your identity is therefore not just about doing new things, it’s about being someone new. The habits you take on as a result are simply evidence of the identity you choose.

Reflect on the following questions to get clear on the story you’re living:

  • What labels have I given myself?
  • Where did those come from?
  • Who would I be without the old story?
  • What traits or behaviours would my ideal self embody?
  • Where am I playing small to stay consistent with my current identity?

Identity change precedes lasting behaviour change. If you want different results, start by becoming the kind of person who naturally creates them.

FEEL

Changing your identity is both exciting and uncomfortable. On one hand, you’re stepping into possibility. On the other, you’re letting go of who you’ve been and that can feel like losing a part of yourself.

Your old identity may have kept you safe, earned you approval, or made you feel in control. That’s why letting go can trigger resistance, fear, and even grief.

The emotional shift comes when you allow yourself to feel the discomfort without retreating back to the old self. Confidence grows each time you act “as if” the new identity is already yours.

To deepen the emotional transition, sit with the following questions:

  • Which parts of my identity feel limiting or outdated?
  • What feelings come up when I imagine living in my new identity?
  • Which fears are really about losing comfort, not about losing me?
  • How can I show myself compassion as I grow into someone new?

Remember - you don’t need permission to outgrow the person you used to be.

DO

Identity change is a process of accepting the discomfort of the new while aligning your daily actions with the person you want to be, until your brain accepts, “This is just who I am now.”

Start with the the following practical steps:

Choose Your New Identity
Write a clear statement like, “I am a confident speaker,” or “I am a disciplined athlete.”

Collect Evidence Daily
Take small, consistent actions that reinforce your new identity. Even two minutes counts.

Change Your Environment
Surround yourself with people, cues, and tools that support your new self.

Use Mental Rehearsal
See and feel yourself living your new identity - your subconscious doesn’t know the difference.

Track Your Wins
Keep a daily record of actions aligned with your new self. This builds proof you can do it and momentum you can lean on when challenges arise.

Speak As If It’s Already True
Your language trains your brain. Stop saying, “I’m trying to…” and start saying, “I am…”

Allow yourself to celebrate small wins as proof you are becoming this new version of yourself.
